Taking on staff for the first time.
5 (Health and Safety) tips!

When your business has grown you may be thinking about hiring staff for the first time. There is quite a lot involved in that. Therefore, in this article we give 5 (health and safety) tips.

Tip #1: Sign up as an employer

When you hire staff for the first time, it is important to register with the tax authorities and KVK as an employer. At the Tax Office (Belastingdienst), when you register as an employer, you get a payroll tax number. This is required because employers must withhold payroll taxes from their employee’s salary. Of course, a tax return must also be filed. At the KVK, it is important to pass on the changed personnel.

Tip #2: Delve into Laws and Regulations
,
When you hire staff for the first time, there are a lot of (as yet unknown) laws and regulations involved. Therefore, it is important to seek depth in good employer and employee-ship. Labor law is the law that governs the relationship between employer and employee. For example, read this book, it can give you an insight into the most important essentials.

Tip #3: Provide a safe work environment

When personnel are employed, a safe work environment must be provided by the employer. A health and safety service helps employers and employees to draw up and implement a working conditions and absence policy. These include good working conditions, a RI&E, prevention officers, and company emergency response officers.

Tip #4: Research grants

If you are a start-up entrepreneur, the Government can give you a helping hand. For example, there is an opportunity to apply for an SME loan or microloan. Through this link you can gain insight into the schemes and grants that may apply when you first take on staff.

Tip #5:  Happy employees

As an employer, you naturally want your employees to flourish. The fact that employees are vital and healthy also prevents absenteeism. Prevention is better than cure. Therefore, our final tip is to pay attention to sustainable employability & ‘Amplitie’. As an occupational health and safety service, Lamers Zorg & Arbeid is affiliated with Oval. On the site of Oval you can find more information on sustainable employability. Don’t hesitate to read other articles on our site such as this one or this one, where we explain different topics related to sustainable employability & ‘amplitie’. A rich life is done in terms of happiness, health, well-being, contentment and harmony.

We hope that the above (health and safety) tips have given you more useful information about what is involved in hiring staff for the first time. It’s a big step to take on staff for the first time, we wish you fun and happiness in growing your business.
